As you read this, there are two unmanned spacecraft – one Chinese, one Japanese – both currently orbiting the Moon. Each is the size of a small bus. Each is loaded with a battery of sophisticated scientific instruments and cameras -- including radar “imaging” – used for looking underneath the lunar surface.

But, looking for what …?

In the last few months, several additional nations have declared that they too are “going to the Moon.” India, Brazil, Germany … Russia … all have recently announced their intentions of not only extensively surveying the Moon from lunar orbit, but some of actually landing cosmonauts to carry out “further investigations” on the surface. Some are even discussing setting up a permanent “moon base.” In January, 2004 -- more than 30 years after the last Apollo landing on the Moon -- President George W. Bush suddenly announced his own “new plan to explore space and extend a human presence across our solar system … beginning with a return to the Moon.” This surprising initiative not only called for new spacecraft, new launch vehicles and new astronauts to resume US lunar exploration … it also envisioned “a permanent scientific base, established by NASA on the Moon.”
